The Best Energy Gels in 2022

the best energy gels

It's no secret, there are a lot of energy gel choices available.

Actually, there are thousands of energy gels and you've probably only tried a handful of them.  Do you want a low sugar, high protein, chocolate flavored, vegan or a whole food energy gel?

If you want to find the best energy gel, you're going to have to know what options are available.

Only here at OutdoorFood.club can you discover the best energy gel because we have the biggest database of energy gels and their nutritional info, all categorised in many different ways, to help you find the perfect energy gel for your next endurance event.

What Are The Best Energy Gels

Below you can see the single best energy gels within their specific category. These are worked out by filtering and sorting through the all of the gels we have added to the site and questioning their nutritional numbers.

The best energy gels cannot be defined by one person, a single article which compares a handful of them, the best energy gels are subjective to you and to your tastes, dietary requirements, nutrition requirements and a myriad of other specifics you require of your outdoor meals.

That is why here at Outdoor Food Club we are cataloguing all of the outdoor foods made by outdoor brands and other food manufacturers which are useful when outdoors, exercising or need something specific and on the go.

This includes energy gels and by gathering all of their nutritional info, we work out basic nutrition stats, like sodium per gram, calories per gram and sodium per dollar and much more you won't find anywhere else online. This enables us to create ranking lists, which are categorised below to show you what are the best energy gels for specific requirements.

The best energy gels for endurance events, running, cycling and other outdoor pursuits, when you need an energy boost, are based on many different factors.

What may be the best energy gel for one person, may be completely unacceptable for another. The best energy gel for your stomach may not work for other athletes and outdoors people and may completely unsettle them.

Some things to consider and which will make the best energy gel for you might come down to just one of the following;

  • The best energy gel flavor will suit one person, but not another,.
  • The best energy gel might be based upon dietary requirements of yours, for one person it may be a vegan energy gel, for others, vegetarian might suffice.
  • The best energy gel for you might be based upon price, the best might be the cheapest energy gel.
  • You may be looking at an energy gel with zero sugar, which means the best energy gel for you would be something like an FBomb.
  • If you are looking at an energy gel with salt and sodium and or caffeine in it, then obviously those with these features would be the best for you.

That is exactly why we have created this site and these comparison pages. If you have all of the facts in front of you, you can find the best that is right exactly for you and not what is best for someone else.

When Should You Eat Energy Gels

You can make this as simple or as complicated as you like, when running I work out when I should eat energy gels depending on a few factors. There are also other factors, such as ingredients used and whether your gut can handle them, we'll get in to that further down.

The most important thing to question is, how long is your run?

If you have eaten within an hour of your run or exercise you are about to partake in you can stick to the following guide.

Your glycogen stores are good for 30-40 minutes, this means that it is recommended to get foods in to you and energy that can be used within that time frame.

Our personal rule of thumb is to eat a gel every 25 minutes.

If you are doing anything less than 40 minutes or even up to an hour, you should be fine without having to consume a gel or other food sources.

If though you will be running over an hour, at least 90 minutes, that is when you should have a plan for when you should eat energy gels.

Should You Even Eat Energy Gels

Energy gels exist for a reason, they are one of the quickest ways to get energy in to the system that you can use whilst doing exercise.

But should you eat them?

If your worry is whether they are good for your or not, there are some healthier options that exist that are made out of completely whole foods ingredients.

If you haven't had any gels before, make sure to try them out before you actually go running or using them on longer exercises.

When trying them before an actual run, at home or at work and find that you seem fine after trying them you should be good to test them on a run.

Like anything else, when trying something new, don't overdo it, slowly build up the amount of gels that you digest and use over a span of a few runs.

Stomach Problems With Energy Gels

If you find you're getting stomach problems with energy gels, it may not be that you can't handle them, it might just be the type of ingredients used in the ones you're trying.

Using the discovery tool you can filter by sugar types, helping you avoid sweeteners that you may not be able to handle.

There is another filter that could help you find the perfect energy gel, ingredients composition. Above the discovery tool you can filter by foods which have mostly or even completely wholefoods and you should find that these work better with your stomach.

These numbers are taken directly from the database and as we can see, the majority of the sugar types used in energy gels are Maltodextrin, followed by cane syrup and fructose. These are all added refined sugars but you don't have to fret. Naturally present sugars which are sugars found in fruits and no added sugar energy gels aren't far behind. Energy Gels With The Most Sodium

The best 10 energy gels with the most sodium, ranked in order of those with the most amount of sodium and high sodium content and the top and then in a descending order.

We have worked out the sodium per gram number for all energy gels by taking the sodium content and serving weight of each gel, from there we can get the sodium per gram number. This is a very important number and it means you can compare all energy gels in an objective and fair manner as it puts them all on level terms. If you were to compare two energy gels with differing sodium levels you might not take in to account the serving weight, which makes it much harder to work out which has the most amount of sodium in it.

Now you can compare safely and work out the best high sodium energy gel for you.

If you are looking specifically for food inspiration or have other questions, head on over to the food comparison database to see all the outdoor food items. Filter the food type by energy gels and click apply. Click the sodium per gram column title and this will sort all energy gels in the database and show those with the most sodium at the top and in a descending order.

Whole Foods Energy Gels

In this list we have added a table of energy gels with our new ingredients composition category. We only include energy gels which are made of whole foods or have mostly whole foods ingredients.

The categorisation for this includes tagging foods when they have whole foods ingredients or processed. In this list you will find zero energy gels which have mainly processed ingredients. You will be able to pronounce nearly all the ingredients that are used in their manufacturing and they should generally be better to digest and potentially healthier.

This categorisation is used just as a guide but we want to point out that energy gels are not made up of the poor cheap sugars you would usually expect.

Instead all of the energy gels have normal fruit, vegetable, nuts, seeds and mineral ingredients that are as close to being raw and a whole food they could be. The only process they should have gone through is to smush them together and get them in the packet.

We have also given you the options to sort the energy gels by different requirements: sodium per gram, calories per gram and sugar per gram. So whatever is important to you, you can see a growing list of whole food none processed energy gels that should work with your outdoors and sports adventure.

Savoury Energy Gels

You might be thinking, these can't be real, but they are, and they are both delicious and full of energy. Here we have a growing list of savoury energy gels for all diets.

An energy gel is something that you can consume quickly, can you with these, yes sure you can. They're basically the same as the energy gels you would think of, fruit or sweet based with sugars you can't pronounce.

Instead these are made on foundations of vegetables and savoury food items instead. So you still get your energy release and sodium covered, we like to think of them as slow release energy gels.

We have ordered this table by those with the most calories per gram, which we have worked out from the calories per serving and the weight of each gel. So you can get a good understanding of which offer more energy than others. We have also included the diet type they cover and flavours they come in.

Remember, this is a continually updated list and as we add new food items to the food discovery tool, this list will also be updated automatically when we add new savoury energy gels.

Energy Gels With Eco Packaging

Energy gels, as convenient as they are, are probably one of the worse offenders in creating plastic rubbish. You grab, you tear, you squeeze and it's in to the bin with the sachet. The wrapper is there to hold the gel until you consume it in a matter of seconds and then it's for the dump.

There is a new trend which is amazing to see, in the energy bar industry but this has yet to make it's way in to the energy gel world, until now.

Notpla create edible packaging of which holds water and lucozade sport drinks.

Ooho and our other packaging solutions are made from Notpla, a material made from seaweed and plants that disappear, naturally.

You grab your Ooho, place it in your mouth, bite in to it, consume the liquid inside and eat the wrapper. If you decide not to eat the wrapper, it can biodegrade in just a matter of weeks.

From nothing, to what sounds like the perfect packaging solution is an amazing feat and hopefully more companies follow suit with their own packaging.
